We’re Hiring an Organizer for Transit Justice

Part-Time TRUST Coordinator Job Description

Transit Riders of the US Together (TRUST), an affiliate of the Labor Network for Sustainability, is an anti-racist, democratically governed, member-led coalition of U.S. transit rider unions focused on grassroots organizing for rider power.

We are seeking a part-time, contract TRUST Network Coordinator to start immediately. The Coordinator will work entirely remotely. The TRUST Coordinator will work to grow and strengthen the TRUST network in collaboration with its elected Initiative Committee. Responsibility for supervising the Coordinator rests with the Initiative Committee and the Director of the Labor Network for Sustainability.

All applications received by March 15, 2022, will be guaranteed to be reviewed.

However, we will continue to keep the position open until it is filled. We will be conducting interviews on a rolling basis as applications are received. This would be the only staff position of the TRUST, but will receive support and guidance from the volunteer members of the TRUST’s Initiative Committee and staff from the TRUST’s fiscal sponsor organization, the Labor Network for Sustainability. The duties and responsibilities of the community organizer include, but are not limited to, the following:

Member Development

The Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to develop the collective power of TRUST members through:

  • Planning and convening monthly peer learning calls
  • Recruit and develop new members
  • Develop training program
  • Preparing shared resources such as organizing toolkits and training materials
  • To help identify and secure funding for longer-term funding for the TRUST coordinator position, alongside members of the TRUST Initiative Committee and staff from Labor Network for Sustainability

External Outreach

To sustain and grow the network, the Coordinator will work to expand the profile of rider organizing in the larger movement for racial, economic and climate justice, by:

  • Representing TRUST members with national organizations and coalitions
  • Managing TRUST communications, website and social media
  • Communicating with funders to drive more resources towards rider organizing

Scope of Work (6 months)

  • Planning and convening monthly peer learning calls
    • Metrics: meaningful, power-building calls monthly (assess at end)
    • Increase attendance: to 30, from avg 12-15 
    • Recruit and develop new members
    • Increase network from 19 to 25 members
    • At least 5 new rider unions organized 
  • Develop training program
    • Getting Your Rider Union Rolling (develop into 1-hour training)
    • Run at least twice
  • Preparing shared resources such as organizing toolkits and training materials
  • Identifying and supporting the application process for additional resources to fund the TRUST network coordinator position beyond the scope of this contract.


  • Organized, responsible, and independent self-starter with the ability to identify new opportunities, while effectively using existing resources
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in grassroots community organizing, coalition organizing or labor organizing
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and to handle fast paced situations
  • Strong and effective communication skills (public speaking, writing, etc.)
  • Values self-improvement, open to giving and receiving feedback
  • Passionate about public transit, labor, environmental justice, and equity.
  • Believes in the power of collective action to bring about systemic change
  • Experience working in an environment where commitment to justice based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation and physical ability is an important institutional value
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Drive, and a willingness to develop additional skills as needed.

Compensation and Hours

The Coordinator position will start as a part-time, 20 hour/week position for a six-month term. The standard part-time compensation for Labor Network for Sustainability contractors is $2,708/month. No benefits will be offered.
